Renewable energy sources and fossil fuel consumption are among the most controversial topics on the news today, and they are among the most highly debated political topics in America. Countries throughout the world are competing to develop the most effective and efficient renewable energy sources in order to replace fossil fuels. The benefits of renewable energy are their fuel source never runs out and their fuel source is natural, as opposed to fossil fuels that are running out and create dangerous pollutants. Currently, the most effective and efficient renewable energy sources--hydroelectric energy, wind energy, geothermal energy, nuclear energy, and solar energy--work by harnessing energy from a different part of the environment and converting it into electricity. Currently, a debate exists over whether or not these energy sources are able to sustain America. The United States of America consists of roughly 132,000,000 houses, millions of stores, and thousands of large buildings (USA). Each of these buildings requires electricity, measured in kilowatt hours, to sustain itself. On average, one house uses 10,837 kilowatt hours every year. This means that the houses alone in America use around 1,435,867,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year (How Much). This is the same amount of electricity that would be needed to run a large hospital, such as Central Dupage Hospital, for over 76 years (Energy).
